Montgomery College Library uses the Library of Congress call number system.  Each book in the library has a unique call number. A call number is like an address: it tells us where the book is located in the library. This system uses a combination of letters and numbers to arrange materials by subjects. To find the call number for a book, you need to search RaptorSearch.  Each item in the catalog has a record which gives information about the book such as title, author, and location including which library location owns the book and the call number of the book.  Below is an example of location information found in the MC Library Catalog:

Location:

  • Takoma Park Circulating Collection
  • Call Number: LB 2395 .C65 1991 (This is the call number for your book)
  • Number of Items: 2
  • Status: Not Charged

How to Read the Number:

The MC Library arranges the books alphabetically by the call numbers.  To locate this book, you would go alphabetically into the stacks to L, then past LA to LB.  Once you see LB, you then go numerically to 2395.  The next step will be the third line alphabetically to C65 and the year to find the exact location of this book.

If you cannot find a particular item, please go to the service desk for further assistance.
